Aizawl Hill Station

The state capital Aizawl is perched at an altitude of 4000 ft. above sea level. It is accessible from Shillong, Guwahati and Silchar, by bus, by road and by car. It stands on a high ridge, fringed on the east by the sylvan valley of the river Tlawng, and on the north bounded by the craggy hills of Durtlang. Adorned by picturesque scenery and peaceful surroundings with mild and enjoyable weather, Aizawl is an ideal hill station for tourists looking for solitude, clean air and new destination.

Aizawl has a distinct characteristic with timber houses, an abundance of flowers and every morning holds a promise of a beautiful day. Tourists can get a stunning view of the Tiawng River in the west or the turial River in the East. The unforgettable hills of Durtlang are yet another beautiful sight. The monsoon months are pleasant and still a good time to visit.

Wildlife

Mizoram is home to a rich variety of wildlife, concentrated especially in the Dampa Sanctuary, founded in 1976, at the north-western tip of the Mizo hills. The Sanctuary is inhabited by swamp deer, tiger, leopard, elephant and hoolock gibbon. The best time to visit is November to March.

Dampa Sanctuary, Aizawl

Dampa Sanctuary is the incredible variety of wildlife in the state of Mizoram is known all over the country. Rich flora and fauna can be experienced in the Dampa Sanctuary which is at the tip of the Mizo hills. Established in the year 1976, it is known to be inhabited by Elephants, Hoolock Gibbon, Leopards, Tigers etc. among other wildlife animals.

Hmuifang Tlang

Hmuifang is a beautiful hill station at a distance of 50 kms from capital Aizawl. Located at an elevation of 1619 m above mean sea level, the hill is canopied with virgin forests. It’s a paradise for nature lovers as one can enjoy nature in a tranquil and serene manner.

Reiek Tlang

Reiek Tlang is a popular tourist destination at a distance of 12 kms from capital Aizawl. Located at an elevation of 1548 metres, the hill is covered with thick green temperate forests. The view of the surrounding valleys and hills are a delight to watch from Reiek Tlang. Even the plains of Bangladesh can be seen on clear sunny days. The Reiek Tourist Resort located along a traditional village is a great place to rejoice.

Durtlang Hills

Durtlang Hills is located to the north of capital Aizawl. The Durtlang Hospital and Aizawl Theological College are spots to take a great view of the surroundings of the hill station. Its rocky hills offer one of the finest spots for trekking.

Champhai

Champhai is perched at an elevation of 1678 metres above mean sea level and is located along the Myanmar border. It offers a great view of the hill ranges of neighbouring Myanmar. The flat area seen from here is in fact the largest plain area of the state.

Tourist attractions in and around Aizawl                                                                                             

Mizoram State Museum

It is at McDonald's hill, in the centre of Aizawl town. This small museum contains the historical relics, ancient costumes, a collection of weapons, musical instruments and Mizo traditional implements. It also has a gallery of displaying the tribal textiles of Mizoram. Open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 5 pm. Saturday 9am to 1 pm. , Entry Fee : Adults Rs 5, children Rs 2

Bara Bazar

It is the main shopping centre in Aizawl. One can get garments, cosmetics, vegetables, Handicrafts etc from here. From the the Weaving Centre above the Bata Shoe Shop, one can see the women at their looms weaving traditional shawls.

Luangmual Handicrafts centre

The ceremonial bamboo hat 'Khumbeu' is made at Luangmual Handicrafts centre, using waterproof wild' Hnahthial' leaves. Situated in Luangmual village 7 km away from the weaving centre, it provides it's visitors to see Mizo's handicrafts items.

Durtlang Hills

Situated on the northern side of Aizawl, the hill offers a fine view of Aizawl township.

Mini Zoological Garden

Situated on a hill called Bethlehem Vengthlang, it is a home to species of animals and birds which are mostly found in the hilly regions of Mizoram. The main attraction is the endangered Sun Bear.

Berawtlang Tourist Complex

Around seven km from Aizawl is Berawtlang Tourist Complex famous for fun picnics.

There are facilities of accommodation in tourist cottages and various Cultural /Heritage Fairs and Festivals are also held here.

Bung and Paikhai

Paikhai is an ideal picnic spot, it is situated around 16 km north of Aizawl. Bung Picnic Spot (15km) is adjacent to this place.

Sairang

It is a beautiful village situated about 19 km west of Aizawl on National Highway 54. Situated on the banks of Tlawng River, the place draws a large number of tourists.

Rungdil (lake of partridge) Lake

Located about 150 km from Aizawl, it is a manmade lake. Sprawls over an area of about 3 hectares, it comprises two lakes, separated by a narrow stretch of land. Surrounded by lush green deciduous forests the lake was the home to a large number of partridges. Boating facility is available at Rungdil.

How To Reach                                                                                                                           

Air
Aizawl is well connected through air. The nearest airport is Lengpui which is very near to Aizawl. The airport is well connected with Kolkata (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International) Airport, Guwahati Airport and Imphal Airport. The three airlines which operate daily flights to and from Lengpui Airport are Air India, Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways.

Rail
Railway services are available in Mizoram up to Bairabi. Plans are there to connect Bairabi with Sairang through Broad Gaurge Railway Track, near Aizawl.

Road
Aizawl is well connected with Silchar through National Highway 54, with Agartala through National Highway 40. National Highway 150 connects Aizawl with Imphal. Taxi services are there in Aizawl- yellow and white taxis are found.  Maruti taxis are also used.
