Sone Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary

Sone Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the banks of the sacred Sone river and it is spread in an area of 41.80 sq.km. Declared in the year 1981 the sanctuary is dedicated to breeding of Gharials which are primarily found in the river. It is another refreshing view of birds chirping on the tree tops while the river is filled with crocodiles and tortoises. Also inhabited by some of the most rare species of amphibians the sanctuary leaves the visitors with an incredible experience of the visit. The Sone river is a home for some rare species of turtles. Many of the birds are migratory and come from far away lands which in turn are a perpetual attraction of the sanctuary. Self-owned four-wheeler Petrol vehicle or Diesel vehicle, which is not older than five years, is the means of travelling inside the area.

Flora and Fauna

Flora: Sone Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary consists of various kinds of endangered floral species. This Sanctuary includes Teak, Sal forests. There are many important Non wood forest products found in this area such as Tendu leaves, Bidi leaves, Sal Seed, Chebulic Myrobolan, Gum etc. Medicinal plants such as Aegle marmelos, Azard, Bixa Orellana, Azadirachta Indica, Butea monosperma, Asparagus racemosus, Argemone Mexicana, Buchanania Ianza, Aloe bardasensis, Acorus calamus, Cassia tora, Curculigo orchiodies, Curcuma longa, Embelia ribes, Cassia fistula, Chlorophtum tuberosum, Rauvolfia Serpentia, Tamarindus Indica, Mucuna Pruriens, Evolvlus asinoides etc.

Fauna: The prominent fauna found in the sanctuary are Gharials, Alligators, Tortoises and a variety of migratory birds. The sanctuary is also rich in a variegated species of wild flora especially bamboos and acacias.

Best time to visit : July to March is the best time to visit.

Accommodation : A Forest rest house named Siddhi situated in the sanctuary is available for accommodation for the tourists.

How to reach Sone Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary:

By Road: Sidhi is the nearest bus stop.

By Air: Banaras is the nearest airport which is 78 km away from the sanctuary from where public or private transport can be hired.

By Rail: Rewa is the nearest railway station which is just 10 km away from the Sone Gharial Wildlife Sanctuary.
