Champawat District was named on the name of Champawati, daughter of King Arjun Deo. The district from beginning was part of District Almora and was transferred to Pithoragarh in 1972, finally on 15th September, 1997 Champawat District was declared as a separate district.
Baleshwar Mandir,Champawat
According to the historians Champawat is believed to as the origin of Kinnar, Naga, and Khas Kings from ancient time. The richness of the place can be seen in the archiological collection. Folk tales mentions that The Tarkeshwar Mandir (Champawat), Baleshwar Mandir (Champawat) ,Ghatotkasha temples and Sapteshwar Mandir (Sipti) are a part of period of Mahabharata. Some of the historical evidences says that king Brahma Deo and King Arjun Deo had their capital here. Earlier the place was under Chandra Vansha (Chand dynasty) and served as their capital, soon in 1790 Gorkharaj ended the Chandra Vansha .Later in 1814 by the entrance of the Britishers the Gorkhas were forced to leave the place.
The history of Champawat District states that Champawat endowed with many well known temples showing excellence of Kumaon ancient architecture. It is also believed the Lord Vishnu appeared as `Kurma Avatar’
Best Season / Best time to visit
Chamba in Uttarnchal is a place that can be visited all round the year.
Summers (March to June) are warm with maximum temperature about 30 °C and minimum temperature touching 14 °C. The season is preferred by all kinds of tourists.
Winters (November to February) are very cool. Minimum observed temperature is about 4 °C. Snow falls were occurring during January and February, but for the last some years there has been no snow.
Monsoons (July to October) offer low to medium rainfalls. Chamba looks beautiful in rains.
Best seasons to visit Chamba are all through the year, may avoid peak winter days.
